Birnbeck Island, Weston-Super-Mare

Weston Star

The town of Weston-Super-Mare, situated just 20minutes boat ride from the coast of Wales, has been given a brand new star attraction – ‘The Weston Star’. This unique structure, a tide catcher that thrills, excites and educates represents not only a contemporary new land mark for the town, but also acts as a catalyst for new leisure, residential and commercial development within the area.

With the charming old stretch of pier from the shoreline to Birnbeck Island having been restored, the folded promenade of the Weston Star maximises the adjacencies and contact of the attractions and events along its length;

Spectacular tidal pools celebrate and illustrate the power and elegance of the tide as the star-shaped structure is flooded and revealed in unexpected ways. Two timber swimming decks that contain treated water for ‘clean’ swimming rise and fall along with the tides and provide ideal conditions to explore the joys of water!

An intriguing residential arrangement of new landscape, terraces and ‘pitched-clusters’ of medium rise towers have been built over new jetty structures, maximising every apartment’s contact with the water while the existing ‘Pleasureland’ of organically arranged Victorian buildings and structures has been given a contemporary revamp.

The tidal energy centre has devised a unique energy strategy that merges the best of natural and hi tech energy sources for this experimental attraction.

Providing a beacon to be seen from Weston town centre is the elevated Cake-Walk Café Tower, atop which the Dive restaurant provides scenic views over Wales and vast areas of the coast line – the perfect view to a beautiful experience!
