Ireland's Main Street
Planning Permission has been granted by Dublin City Council for the redevelopment of the Royal Dublin Hotel on O’Connell Street, Dublin. The team worked on the facade in collaboration with Ashlin Coleman Heelan Architects in 2004 as part of major redevelopment works to the existing hotel.
The O’Connell Street Integrated Area Plan sets out a vision to transform the street’s commercial, environmental and social character. The redevelopment of the Royal Dublin Hotel offers a significant opportunity to contribute to the improvement of Ireland’s Main Street.
The proposed arrangement of windows to the new limestone facade makes reference to the traditional hole-in-wall fenestration typical to much of O’Connell Street. The rhythm of large and small, paired apertures across the facade echoes the shifted juxtaposition of windows seen across neighboring party wall lines. This is the character of O’Connell Street and is unlike the regular fenestration pattern seen in Dublin’s Georgian facades. A fifth floor attic containing penthouse rooms with terraces is masked by a stone brise soleil running the full width of the facade
