Island Treasure Chest
Completed in July 2000, the project has been
warmly received by the Jersey community.
The site is a former quarry in a cul-de-sac in St.Helier,
with high rock faces to the north, east and south.
The site layout responds to
the security zoning of the brief which ranged
from
public (exhibition),
controlled access (education and reading
room),
secure (staff
areas)
and strong rooms (the repository).
The port cochere announces the public entrance and way through to
visitor parking and a south facing courtyard. The courtyard is overlooked,
at first floor level, by the public reading room
which is an oak paneled 'treasure chest’. The repository
is a four storey high ‘strong box’
sitting against the quarry walls.
The project required collaboration working with BDK Architects in St. Helier and understanding the skills and materials available in an island economy. The passive environmental strategy enabled over £250,000 to be saved on the air conditioning installation which in turn saved over £40,000 per year in running and maintenance costs.
