Vippetangen, Oslo, Norway

A flexible place in the heart of Oslo

Metropolitan Workshop was commissioned by the Fjord City Office in Oslo (part of the Oslo Planning Office) for a masterplanning study for the area of Vippetangen in the centre of Oslo.

The site is next to one of Norway’s most important historical monuments, the Akershus Castle, and is part of the industrial heritage of Oslo. Metropolitan Workshop was commissioned to investigate the reuse of the existing industrial structures on the site, with the view to creating a coherent, new district for Oslo.

The Practice adopted a strategy for incremental change, identifying early wins and some more ambitious dramatic interventions that could happen later. Among our ideas was the concept of a flexible, multi-programmable space, to host activities that would change with the seasons and the time of the day, A ‘hot house’ garden is proposed on top of the silo, and a new island is formed to contain the existing ferry terminal operations.

The study will form the basis for the future political evaluation of the site and subsequent planning policy.
