Green Community
This site is in the Green Belt but was and has remained in industrial and storage use since before designation. The London Borough of Redbridge has been seeking a solution to this intractable situation for some years.
Metropolitan Workshop were commissioned by the landowner and his agents to transform this prominent, private industrial site into a spacious, elegant, well planned hamlet with public access to its open space. The design ambitions are to transform this private inaccessible site into a new found publicly accessible place.
The 3 new components of which are:
The Hamlet – with a strong identity and which sits comfortably in its landscape
The Green – at the focus of the hamlet will be a new publicly accessible, well managed open space
The Footpath – a new permissive route allowing pedestrian and cycle connection from Repton Park to Roding Lane North. Also offering new safe linkage for Fullwell residents to Roding Lane North
Proposed buildings are inspired by their planned context – each home type has a character derived from its particular location
- House in the trees
- Terrace overlooking green
- Mews
The plan types have to be repetitive but the strong rhythm and short terraces are not monotonous. Mature dark brick is proposed with cedar clad annexes with copper roofs. Alcove balconies on the top floor level provide private outdoor space and identify each home in the terrace.
