Queen Victoria Seaman's Rest, Poplar, London

Interlocking Massing

Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest was established in the 1880’s to cater for the large itinerate workforce of the nearby London docks. MW were engaged by l HARCA, the local RSL, in 2004 to investigate options for the provision of new premises for the 120 bed hostel that would meet the higher standards of accommodation inherent in current mandatory requirements for the independent living of all residents.

The site, on East India Dock Road, London E1, is to be cleared in a phased rebuild of the hostel and cross funding housing element. The design objective is the integration and yet retention of the identity of these two separate uses on a single high density site.
