Marylebone, Great Central House - BCO Shortlist 2010

In 2007 ‘The Office’ commissioned Metropolitan Workshop to lead the design to refurbish and modernise five floors of the Grade II Listed Great Central House to contemporary work space. Marylebone Station and Great Central House were built in 1899 providing the London terminus to the Great Central Railway.

The station buildings lie within the Dorset Square Conservation Area but were unoccupied for 30 years.
Working with Westminster City Council this involved the sensitive refurbishment of the old railway offices, the committee and board rooms, retaining the historic character of the interiors whilst introducing new design elements.

A new lift was installed together with a first floor reception, providing a new heart to the building. Additional space was also created by extending into a previously unoccupied roof space. Bespoke furniture was designed for a number of key spaces, including ‘railway carriages’ as meeting rooms to maximise the use of the corridor spaces.
